Richard qualified from the University of Sheffield in 1987 and following extensive postgraduate education mainly in restorative dentistry, he completed the Certificate in Implant Dentistry on the world renowned intensive 18 month One to One Implant course at the University of Sheffield in 2005.

Further more advanced courses have followed by the top clinicians in Europe in more hard and soft tissue manipulation involving bone grafting and aesthetics. To date, he has successfully placed and restored over 350 implants and is an active member of the Association of Dental Implantology. Richard has also been a trainer dentist for the last 8 years.

Outside dentistry, Richard likes to spend time with his wife and three boys and when time allows enjoys going to the gym, playing golf and since hanging up his boots, likes to watch Rugby!

Alex qualified from the University of Sheffield in 1999. He was one of only 8 students to qualify with honours and also gained a distinction in the clinical section of the final examinations.

Following a postgraduate surgical training course at Sheffield University Alex held a post teaching undergraduate students in the department of oral surgery.

Alex now works exclusively in private practice. He has completed three one-year courses At St Ann’s Dental Academy, Manchester, one of the UK’s leading implant centres. Alex is an active member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Association of Dental Implantologists, and the Faculty of General Dental Surgeons.

Away from dentistry Alex enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters and, when time allows, enjoys running, mountain biking and snowboarding.

Ken is a well-established NHS consultant having taken up his post in 1994, and has been involved with anaesthesia for dentistry throughout this time.

Ken has written several papers related to dental anaesthesia and has presented his work at meetings in the UK and abroad. He is very involved with the sub-specialty at the national level as well, having served two terms on the Council of the Association of Dental Anaesthetists, of which he is currently President. 

When not at work, Ken enjoys travel and is a keen scuba diver.

Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. Often the implant can be placed at the same time as removal of the tooth all on the same day.

If an implant has a screw-thread on its outer surface it can be screwed into position and if it does not, it is usually tapped into place. The main aim during installation of any implant is toachieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. This creates an initial stability, which over time is steadily enhanced by further growth of bone into microscopic roughnesses on the implant surface.

In order to support replacement teeth, dental implants normally have some form of internal screw thread or post space that allows a variety of components to be fitted. Frequently asked questions
Q What are dental implants?
A A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone.  It is used to support one or more false teeth.  In practice, both the false teeth and their supporting rod are known as ‘implants’.

Q Are implants safe?  How long will they last?
A Implants are a well-established, tried-and-tested treatment.  90 per cent of modern implants last for at least 15 years.

Q I have some of my own teeth.  Can I still have implants?
A Yes.  You can have any number of teeth replaced with implants – from one single tooth to a complete set.

Q Can implants always be used to replace missing teeth?
A It depends on the state of the bone in your jaw.  Your dentist will arrange for a number of special tests to assess the amount of bone still there.  If there is not enough, or if it isn’t healthy enough, it may not be possible to place implants without grafting bone into the area first.

Q Do implants hurt?
A Placing the implants requires a small operation.  This can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or with a general anaesthetic.  You will not feel any pain at the time, but you may feel some discomfort during the week following the surgery.  This is usually due to having stitches in place, and the normal healing process.

Q Can I have the new teeth straight away?
A Yes. We can often attach teeth to the implants immediately. However if the bone is not quite dense enough, it is sometimes prudent to allow implants to integrate with bone for several months before they are “loaded”. If this is the case, a temporary restoration or a denture can be worn throughout this period.

Q How long does treatment take?
A Treatment times can vary on an individual basis. The ideal patient could expect to have implants placed and a restoration fitted to them at the same visit. If however bone quantity and quality is not favourable then the final result will take longer to achieve. The dentist’s at Dream Implant Clinic will be able to give you a treatment timetable following your assessment.

Q If I had gum disease when I had my own teeth, will I get it with the teeth attached to the implants?
AYes, if you don’t care for them well enough.  If you keep them clean, and don’t smoke, then you should not have any problems.

Q Can I take the teeth out if they are fixed to implants?
A Most artificial teeth attached to implants can only be placed and removed by the dentist.  However, if you have complete dentures fixed to the implants by attachments, then you’ll be able to take them out for cleaning.

Q Do the implants show?
A Your dentist will make sure that the implants won’t show during all normal movements of the mouth and lips.  You will need to be able to see them, so that you can clean them properly.

Q Do I have an implant for each missing tooth?
A No, unless you’re only having a single tooth replaced. Normally, five or six implants are used to replace all the teeth in one jaw, as each implant can usually support two teeth. For a few missing teeth, two or three implants may be used.

Q What if I get hit in the face?
A Implants and the teeth they support can be damaged by an accident in the same way that natural teeth can.  However, if the false teeth are damaged and the remnants are left in the bone then they may be more difficult to remove than natural teeth would be.  After healing, new false teeth can then be placed alongside the fragments.

Q What happens if the implant does not bond (integrate) with the bone?
A This happens very rarely.  If the implant becomes loose during the healing period or just after, then it is easily removed and healing takes place in the normal way.  Once the jaw has healed, another implant can be placed there.  Or, the dentist can make a bridge, using the implanted false teeth that have ‘taken’.

Q What about alternative solutions?
A An implant to replace a single tooth avoids the need to cut down the teeth either side for crowns to support a bridge.  Normal dentures often mean you can’t eat or speak well, due to the dentures moving about.  But teeth attached to an implant don’t cause this problem.

Remaining two lower terminal teeth removed and two implants placed which subsequently had two male abutments fixed to them. The lower full denture attached to these abutments by way of two equivalent female abutments which then allowed the denture to clip very firmly in place but was able to be removed for cleaning.

Lower failing teeth were removed and then replaced with 4 implants and  fixed bridge attached.

Case10
Remaining upper teeth removed and replaced with 6 implants and a fixed bridge

Patient was assaulted and had to have upper left central incisor extracted and an implant placed. The upper right central incisor had to have root canal therapy and a crown was subsequently placed at both sites

Following the fracture of an old crown Alex recommended a dental implant to replace the tooth which was beyond saving. I was a little nervous as I thought the procedure might be a little painful. I can honestly say that I was totally surprised!! The day after the implant was placed I felt no pain and would say the procedure was easier than having a tooth out. As a nervous patient I was not looking forward to having four implants placed in one session. I needed the work doing as my upper teeth had become very loose due to gum disease. I was surprised how well I felt after the surgery. I was very impressed with the level of care.
